Gruudash and Spencer were two of several children captured in a Split Tooth Orc raid on their village near the northern border. They were enslaved around the age of 4, raised to be in the first wave sent in when raiding villages. Being slaves they were not allowed to ride when the tribe moved, but rather were forced to run to keep up, generally with whips and fear of death as motivation, for they would not stop if a slave could not keep up, but would just drag them behind, joking how it tenderized the meat.
Gruudash grew accustomed to traveling in the heavier crude hide/chain bastardized set of armor he was forced to wear, while Spencer had trouble keeping up the pace wearing such cumbersome armor, and removed the heavier, more protective pieces, opting for ease of movement and lightness of weight over the heavier protection granted from the chain pieces.
Orcs, being cruel as they are, took amusement in beating their fighting slaves, saying they were breaking their bones to make them stronger when they heal, but that was just an excuse to inflict pain. On some unfortunates, those they particularly disliked, or those who had trouble remembering their place, they would make punish themselves.
Spencer being one of the few to survive these punishments, though still carrying the scars left behind. This punishment was the forced use of a nasty weapon, as dangerous to the untrained user as it is to the user’s target, a thick rod of wood, with a wicked blade on each end. They would force him to practice fighting with this weapon; any who resisted were used to feed the trainers that day, being processed before being killed. Most others died to self inflicted wounds received during these practices.
Gruudash grew more and more vicious in battle, reveling in the pain inflicted on his opponent, often getting a little to excited when fighting with orcish trainers, resulting in several beatings each week. Where as Spencer’s calculating drew their scorn, Gruudash’s fierceness spared him the punishment Spencer received, for him it was whips, brands and beatings, punishments which caused great pain, but rarely resulted in death.
It was their fifth raid that finally pushed them to the point of either escaping or dying in the attempt. It was on this raid that they themselves had encountered other children, those about the age they were when they were taken. They tried to get the children to hide, but an Orc burst in, dragging the children away, to suffer the same fate they had at the hands of the Split Tooth tribe. That night they heard the screams of the these children, who they had earlier overhear the Orcs saying were too soft and tender to waste as fighting stock.
That night Spencer was able to pick the lock on their cage, and retrieve weapons from the cache, the wicked weapon he had become intimately familiar with, and the hulking brutal sword with which Gruudash had found comfort. They were spotted just as they were leaving the encampment, and lucky for them the Orcs who had spotted them had an axe they wished to grind with them, without interference from others in the tribe, and so gave chase without alerting the others. Eventually catching up to the two young men, they would soon find themselves on the receiving end of 12 years worth of pent up rage, for there was no longer a reason for the boys to hold back the tide of their anger, allowing it, for the first time, to flow freely, giving them strength.
They wandered for what seemed to be about a month before finally finding a settlement to rest and heal. Thankfully Spencer felt at home in the wilderness. Surviving off of the land came naturally to him, having an easy time tracking down, and trapping quarry, and knowing which plants and water would be nourishing, and which were harmful.
